According to a recent report from the Corporation for Supportive Housing, homelessness in Connecticut is on the rise. More than 33,000 people in Connecticut will experience homelessness annually, and of these, more than 15,000 will use shelters. Recent statistics show that the length of stay in homeless shelters has increased, and the number of times people were turned away from shelters due to space constraints increased by a startling 141 percent.

The Connecticut Supportive Housing Pilots Initiative, which invests in housing and services for families and individuals experiencing homelessness -- particularly those suffering from addiction or mental illness -- was awarded the Ash Institute Innovations in American Government award. Supportive Housing Pilots Initiative implements a cost-effective model that demonstrably cuts clients' dependence on medical, mental health, criminal justice and other public services. The YWCA of the Hartford Region's Soromundi Commons was the first Pilots initiative to be completed and was visited as part of the award evaluation process.
