Our Programs and Services: Young Women's Leadership Corps - Schedule
The YWLC is a free after-school program for young women between the ages of 12 – 18 years, grades 7 – 12. YWLC is a practical, life-based youth development program, which empowers young women to acquire the confidence and knowledge they need to be successful throughout their lives..  Now in its eighth year, YWLC continues to provide participants with leadership skills so that they can become productive leaders in their communities, workplaces, and schools. Key objectives for young women in YWLC are to:
  • Be introduced to a non-traditional athletic activity
  • Become aware of and become actively involved in a community awareness campaign
  • Learn to communicate effectively as an individual and member of a group
  • Set personal goals (e.g. develop academic and career goals) and develop enhanced self-worth; and
  • Gain knowledge necessary to make positive and healthy choices (i.e. regarding wellness, substance use, financial literacy, sexual activity and personal safety)
The program runs throughout the academic school year at the following schools in Hartford: AI Prince Tech, Bellizzi Middle School, Bulkeley High School and Weaver High School. The program is also offered at Bloomfield High School and Windsor High School.

The following is a sample of scheduled activities:
  • Educational Workshops (topics:  nutrition/fitness, anatomy/physiology, sexual decision making, money management, how to network and how to find a job, leadership, public speaking, college preparation, etc.)
  • A community project
  • College tours
  • A graduation celebration

The YWCA provides a free snack and a bus token to participants of the program. Graduates of YWLC receive a certificate of achievement and have the opportunity to remain involved with the program as volunteers.
