Together we stand to eliminate racism and empower women. Thank you for your support. We can’t do it without you.
At the 15th annual In the Company of Women Luncheon, over 1,500 people came together to hear Ms. Norris and raised their hands to say, "Yes, I support the mission of YWCA." Michele Norris gave a thought provoking presentation that taught us some valuable lessons including:
1. Don't be afraid to ask for help. No one can do it alone. Strength comes in numbers. Together we are allies. Together we can make a difference.
2. Listen to each other and share your family traditions and stories. Who in your family has an extraordinary tale to tell? Encourage them to share that story with you.
3. Take your Vitamin C
By transforming herself into diverse characters telling their stories, from keeping the Sabbath in an electronic age to the tragedy of AIDS, Anna Deavere Smith* introduced us to individuals she had met in her travels. Their stories were moving and her unique portrayal of the individuals brought accounts of racism into the spotlight. Ms. Smith’s message was clear: consequences and injustice of racism are not just limited to people of color, they impact all of us.
In a unique and memorable way Anna Deavere Smith spoke about American Character at our 13th Annual In the Company of Women luncheon. Thanks to your generous support the luncheon proved to be a marvelous afternoon. This year the luncheon raised close to $400,000, proceeds which will be used to benefit YWCA and its many programs. With the help of your support the YWCA is able to bring to life our shared mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.
Thank you for your generosity. You make it happen.
An Afternoon with Isabel Allende -
Stories, Dreams, and Inspirations
April 13, 2007, Connecticut Convention Center
Stories, Dreams, and Inspirations….Isabel Allende’s message at YWCA’s 12th annual In the Company of Women luncheon spoke to the need for equality for all, in particular women and children, the role women play in achieving this goal, and the people who have inspired her along the way. With humor and passion, she spoke of the great triumphs and tragedies in her own life—the death of her daughter, Paula, the political turmoil that forced her family from Chile, and the challenges and rewards of writing.
The luncheon was held on April 13, 2007 at the Connecticut Convention Center. Co-chaired by Yvette Melendez and Peyton Patterson, over 1,500 participants were inspired by Isabel Allende, the Latin American writer who spoke at the event.
Isabel energized the crowd and drew rave reviews. Attendees also learned about products, services and resources for women from diverse exhibitors and had the opportunity to network with other successful, inspiring women who are helping YWCA achieve its mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

In a compelling and memorable way Jeannette Walls shared her life story about growing up in extreme poverty. Her story of triumph spoke to the interconnectedness of humankind, explaining that we all have more in common than we might think.
What's more is that Ms. Walls' experiences mirror the lives of many of the people YWCA serves. 1,400 guests came out in support of this year’s event and a total of $361,080 was raised. The dollars raised at the luncheon and your generosity through the year help us help those individuals reach a brighter future.
